What is TRX?
TRX was formed by US Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick, and is a specialized form of suspension training which uses a suspension trainer and body weight. It can be used to develop core stability, strength, coordination, and to build muscle simultaneously. It can be utilized for a wide variety of movements like planks, pulls, pushes, squats and lunges. .
What does it do?
TRX:
Improves muscle strength
Improves balance and coordination
Improves core and joint stability
And improves cardiovascular endurance when performed in an interval fashion similar to a circuit training workout.
Risks of this modality
Even though TRX can be very effective in improving your core strength and flexibility, it is important to know that it can also be unsafe for beginners and the individuals that have poor core strength, balance and flexibility. To use TRX safely, it is important to have a base level of these components to avoid injury. For instance, if you have bad joints, it can be very risky for you to use TRX, and even though it is easy to use, it can lead to injury when done incorrectly, as with any other exercise.
Benefits
TRX works several muscles at the same time. You pretty much have to engage your core while doing any TRX exercise.
It can also be done anywhere as long as you have the suspension trainer.
It also heavily relies on bodyweight, so if you enjoy calisthenics or bodyweight exercises, you’d enjoy TRX.
TRX Training vs Traditional Weight Training
Even though there is more research on weight training and its effect on building muscle than TRX, TRX is proven to be more effective in improving core strength and stability, because you have to engage your core with every exercise. TRX can also work various muscle groups at the same time, compared to weight training, which mostly works specific muscles in isolation. So for clients that like to do full body workouts, TRX can be incorporated into their plan. It can also be good for clients that don’t have a lot of time to workout, because TRX exercises can be done in about 30 mins, as they engage several different muscles.
